Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger Episode 1

Wow finally decided to start even though I'm 14 episodes behind. Oh well I feel that this way I have time to get some resolve on this blog as well as some me time. The plan of attack is a bi-weekly post, Monday and Thursday. Each time I will post a current episode until I catch up. Then I will start working on an older sentai series. Please note that I know absolutely nothing about Japan culture's. I took a few years of it's foreign language but that is not enough to make me some 'Japan Expert'. If you are looking for a critical eye of Japan please go somewhere else. Now then, let us begin!

Alright so alot of people already know that it begins with the Legendary War, all of the super sentai basically go charging in one big battle. Against the Zangyack empire. Basically all of the teams show their stuff and when they realize they are up against impossible odds they decide to combine all of their power into one large energy beam to take them all out. This finishing blast results in them losing their powers and as time goes on people begin to consider them as stories instead of the real deal.

After this we finally see the group of heroes in the season. Luka which seems to be the only actual pirate, Joe being cool, calm and collected. Ahim is the princess while 'Doc' or Don is just a wuss. Once they reach earth they notice the Zangyack are surrounding earth and preventing them from landing. This is where we meet our crews captain, which states that they just continue forward.

Use plastic keys and hope for the best?

This is where we go into the beginning of the show's opening. Honestly the song does not feel truly epic at all but if it does not get you pumped for some Gokai-green antics nothing will.

Damnit Don strike a pose! We aren't even fighting yet!

Once the show resumes we see our pirates blasting straight through the enemy and not really worrying about anything. The enemies attack of course and once they think they had a winning chance the pirate ship shows its true form and becomes the crews giant robot for a quick moment.

After they land on earth they decide to make their announcement that they are looking for a treasure. Of course nobody knows what they are talking about at all. Which begins the main quest for the story, to seek 'The greatest treasure in the universe'. Of course a leader cannot think unless he gets food and what better thing to do after making such a huge entrance then grab some grub.

A quick scene is shown displaying the main baddies for the season, the prince of the Zangyack empire, Barizorg, Damaras and Insarn. Insarn seems to be the groups mechanic while Barizorg has no personality. Damaras is probably the smartest one aboard since he warns the prince to take these pirates seriously which is quickly ignored.

We get back to the heroes and their meal showing a little more insight into Ahim's background as a princess getting a chance to eat some 'commoner' food. Before they can even taste the curry, the restaurant is blown up. Leading to the actual combat for the episode. Don discusses how the Zangyack plan on conquering the planet and Marvelous state that it's time to head back to the ship. While the team starts running away, Ahim notices a group of children and women about to get killed by the space invaders. Right before our monster of the week kills them off, the captain shoots him and we begin the teams entrance. While the team is given a chance to leave they refuse and stand to fight. Hence they begin their first transformation into the Gokaigers.

'Gokai Change' are the keywords this season

Their first major fight is nothing to walk away from as they show impressive skill while keeping all of the teammate's personality intact. We even see them switching their weapons around mid battle. After the major fight we see them using their true power, which are called 'ranger keys', which allow them to transform into the older super sentai teams. They begin to turn into the 1st super sentai team, the Go-Rangers and use the Go-Ranger Hurricane.

What the Go-Ranger hurricane does is create the enemies weakness and destroys them. Yes they fight it's exact weakness, probably the hugest dues ex machina attack in super sentai. Once a group of the baddies are defeated the Gokaigers transform into Shinkengers, the 33rd super sentai team, then immediately transform into the Magi-Rangers. Once they reach the big bad they go turn into the Gokaigers and use their final attack- The Final Wave. Basically a super slash with their swords.

After the battle, the team is thanked by the Gokaigers but they simply tell them that they attacked them because they ruined their curry, giving the kids no reason to thank them, concluding the episode with a pokerap of the super sentai.

Overall the episode was an excellent start for the series, great action scenes are we got a good idea of how all the characters act, we know the villains mean business and that our heroes do not want to be called heroes at all. The monster of the week is forgettable and has no real special powers besides being a bigger target. It should be important to note that their are two forms of common baddies, the smaller ones being grey while the bigger ones are blue, showing more intelligence than their grey counter parts. Let us just hope they keep this pace up.
